A mother's grief

A Kiss

by Paul McFarland

Kiss Contest Winner
She kissed her only son goodbye
The day he went to fight.
She prayed to God he would not die,
At bedtime every night.

But, as a hero, he came home
Beneath his country's flag,
And ere he's laid beneath the loam,
While clutching his dog tag,

His mother places one last kiss
Upon his silent lips,
Then goes back home to reminisce
And try to come to grips

With that great sacrifice she made
By giving up her son,
And all the nights that she had prayed
While tears had freely run.

She knows that he'll be waiting there
In heaven when she dies,
And then another kiss they'll share,
But this time, no goodbyes.
