A selection of sayings

Carpe Diem

by Debbie D'Arcy

I've selected here these adages
I'd like to share with you.
They're rich and speak for all of us
I hope you'll find that true.

My first is: "Knowledge equals power"
Frank Bacon said it all!
So don't let hubris win the day -
"Pride comes before a fall!"

"Respect thyself if thou wouldst be
Respected (then) by others."
All shame be shun, then value be
Shown by all your brothers.

And what about: "Out of nothing
Nothing can (then) become?"
Aim to give with all your heart
Or else to be left numb.

"People reign, the elite (will) rule"
A truism well spoken!
For minorities will dominate
Systems that are broken.

"If you want peace, prepare for war."
The wisdom is quite sound
As in a world so perilous
Distractions still abound.

One saying that is  pertinent
Is: "Who will guard the guards?"
Self-scrutiny should also rest
On those who hold the cards.

"What hurts us (still) instructs us"
As Franklin once did say.
We need to face those challenges
If we're to shine one day.

"Physician heal thyself" it's said
Repair your faults before
You look to others so to do
And "Know thyself" much more.

"From flowers bees make honey and
Spiders poison" also thought.
Much worthiness from  wisdom grows
Yet harm from others brought.

And Virgil said: "Love conquers all"
An upbeat tale to tell
While Shakespeare coined a phrase from old:
"All's well that (then) ends well."

So many more but time runs out
I've saved the best 'til last
It's "Carpe Diem" - "Seize the day"
For me - it's unsurpassed!
