The Beacon Beckons

by Mike Grimes

Summoned from my sleep, I heard a siren, then a second.
Simply irresistible, the demon beacon beckoned.

I slip into my slippers and I shuffle to the door
Where I've wandered in my trance so many times before.

Deep inside the city I can see it's lemon light,
Urging me to waste the day and fall into the night.

I must heed the call because the pull is far too strong,
Strong enough to blur the lines of what is right or wrong.

Tense and taut, my body fought, the siren sound increased!
One finger of my God came down and beacon sirens ceased.
