Gale Force

by Debbie D'Arcy

It roars with rage and beats its fists with glee,
resists with force the salvage from the fight.
It takes no heed of nature's frenzied plea,
its ancient howl, a weapon causing fright.

And weakened by its challenge, I feel lost,
with legs of lead, I need to hold on fast
for it will win, I fear, at any cost
and prove it wrong I must until the last.

But, then, I've found some shelter safe inside,
I know that joy from warmth will soon abound.
With curtains drawn, all witness soon denied
and echo's wrath becomes a distant sound.

Then nature in the calm resumes its song,
in hope that stormy skies won't come along.

This verse is intended to convey the destructive power of wind, sweeping up everything in its path. Where we live in the UK, we're increasingly subjected to systems of wild weather from the Atlantic that, literally, roar through our garden like a predatory animal in sight of its prey.

The wind is my absolute nemesis as I suffer from a balance issue and I fear for all nature, people and buildings whenever it strikes. That said, the calm aftermath is sometimes worth the agonising wait - even if we do have to venture out to assess the damage!
