The Broken Pact

by DragonSkulls

Returning from our latest quest,
our sacks were filled with payment due.
The dragon slain as per request,
the Islanders can now renew.

Our chosen path was well defined
beneath the trees of mighty oak.
We paused in fear of what we'd find,
so close to home we smelled the smoke.

With haste we crossed the open dale,
then to my knees I fell bereft.
Our hamlet gone in stark detail,
where only homes of ash were left.

The bodies sprawled where they were killed,
our friends, our wives, our children too.
I questioned why their blood was spilled
atop the coat of morning's dew.

A child emerged and slowly crept,
her darkened face was stained with tears.
I picked her up as she still wept,
and tried to calm her valid fears.

She witnessed suits of red and blue,
a raven crest upon each man.
Then instantly my men all knew
the guilty were the Gastiff Clan.

She told of women gagged and chained.
So savage, yet they spared their life.
And of the few that they detained,
she knew that one was my own wife.

How dare they break the pact we swore,
a treaty that was signed for peace.
This breach is nothing less than war.
Now vengeance is what I'll release.

I gaze out on the foggy morn
that blankets thick across the bay.
I will defend the vows I've sworn.
"Fear not, my love, I'm on my way."
