Would I if I Could

by Tom Horonzy

Let me begin by saying the older I get, the colder I get, but what might be the alternative? I can guarantee I cannot get younger, and besides, would I if I could?

Life might be better if I was a bettor, but I realize everything has an opposite.

Tangible evidence is in my history. The opposite of whatever was could await me, meaning, should I be willing to wager that a good thing past might be improved without weighing the possibility that what I lived could instead be worse? To that, I would be diametrically opposed.

Not knowing where it would leave me today, I'd likely lean towards staying where I am, for as the adage says, "a bird in the hand is better than a bird in the bush." That's logical. However, being inquisitive, I might inquire what kind of bird hides in the shrubbery.

If a sparrow, it might feed me for a day, a chicken two days longer, but a twenty-two-pound turkey could last a week or beyond if I froze parts of it.

Still, another proverb comes to mind, how "curiosity killed the cat." It warns dangers await in experimentation which can lead to personal misfortune, devastation, or death unless it comes with nine lives. Even then, if told, "here, are your spare lives," I'd be skeptical for nothing is guaranteed.

As an example, we had a kitten, eight weeks old, snatched away by a husky which snapped its neck. If he had lost eight previous lives before its demise at such an early age, the poor creature led one troublesome life. So, why would I if I could?

Let me end this verse, categorically denying any interest in turning back the pages of time to correct what I fell short of doing successfully on my initial attempt now that I am seventy-five.

Therefore to answer my question, would I if I could? Not a snowball's chance in Hades. Why? If I didn't win any beauty contest back in my heydays, my chance of winning now are slim to none.
