My Wish for You

by pome lover

Poem For A Child Contest Winner

If I were a dog I could run really far

And let my fur blow when I ride in a car,

My head out the window; the world flashing by,

I’d look up and see all the clouds in the sky.

If I were a cat, I could run up a tree

And go up so high that no one could find me,

And I would purr loud when my mom rubbed my head,

And wend ‘round her legs when it’s time to be fed.

When I had a parakeet, he used to walk

In front of the mirror, where he learned to talk

he’d look at himself and then he’d say, “Hi, John.”

And walk up and down the mantel he's on.

If I was a gerbil, so tiny and small

I’d think of my childhood and try to recall

The times that I needed someone to advise

Me how to grow big, and get twice my size.

I’d like to help dog, and I’d like to help cat,

I’d like to help everyone and show them that

It’s good to be kind, but also to be wise

Don’t listen to badness dressed up in disguise.

Smart is the word that counts most in this world

It holds true for boys and it holds true for girls;

Mixed with integrity, honest and true;

This, boys and girls, is what I wish for you!
