Marta Suarez had a problem; his name was Enrique, a man with an addiction, a gun, and a very short temper. He was also quite controlling, constantly intimidating her, especially when she threatened to leave him and return to her parents' home.
That's when things started to turn ugly. He would threaten her, promise to slit her cat's throat, and if she ever moved back home, torture and dismember her parents and younger sister.
She was petrified when he would come back to their apartment, drunk and high on Meth. He always demanded sex when he was in this state and would beat her if she tried to resist his demands. Knowing his violently depraved moods, she was always in fear of him killing her in retribution for not succumbing to his desires.
His violence, paranoia, and constant need to control her, consumed him. He became a constant threat, not caring who saw his behavior, only wanting her to know that she was to obey him, or else.
Marta contemplated suicide as the only relief from the possibility of being killed one day when his temper consumed him. She decided to make a call home, just to hear her parents' voices.
Her dad answered the phone and could tell by the tone of her voice, she was disconcerted. He knew the tone. It was the same as when she was a young girl and needed to talk but was concerned that she might not want to get the answer she hoped for.
Her dad was able to convince her to meet him for lunch a few blocks from her apartment. It was his day off and he knew she needed him. Seeing him outside the restaurant, she hugged him tightly and began to sob. He held her tightly and let her know everything would be alright, and that he knew something was wrong when she called.
They sat in the restaurant and she began to slowly tell him about Enrique, that he was initially a nice guy, but over time he changed, and now she was afraid of him. At first, she was unable to tell him she was petrified, but when she started to let it all out, she realized they spoke for over an hour as she provided him details that inwardly made his blood boil.
When her dad suggested an intervention, she became visibly shaken, and told him it would not be a good idea because of Enrique's temper. It became clear that he was not going to allow his daughter to remain in such a volatile environment. After he told her it was not an option to refuse, she acquiesced and agreed to go home for one night.
Relieved that she would be safe until he could devise a plan to get her out of that situation, they exited the restaurant. Getting halfway to the car, Marta stopped abruptly. Her dad saw a man starting to approach her, then heard him say: "Where you been Bitch, you weren't home. I told you to not leave the freaking house. You're going to get some beating. I'll teach you to not respect me!"
Walking around his daughter, her dad replied: "Are you talking to her?"
Enrique replied: "Fuck off old man. She's mine. I own her." Enrique pulled out his gun and menacingly pointed it at Marta's dad.
When Marta's dad pulled out his service weapon and shouted: "Police, drop the weapon," Enrique became enraged, he started to pull the trigger, but never made it.
Detective Sergeant Roberto Suarez had already fired one kill shot into the heart of his daughter's menacing boyfriend. Enrique fell face down onto the sidewalk, a pool of blood forming beneath him.
Sergeant Suarez turned to his daughter and told her to call her mother to let her know what happened and that it was going to be very late when they would be arriving home. Then he called 911 to report the incident, knowing the hours of paperwork and the Shooting Review Investigation was all worth it. His little girl Marta was safe.
