150 word Detective Story

by Philip Clarke

The  detective had “enough” probable cause. A local said the two argued, and where some family lived. Rumored to be  involved with drugs. He had instinct for these things – his  hunches always paid off.  So he beefed up his statement in the warrant for the murder charge, just enough to make it go; and  a search warrant for that house – he knew the  judge would sign. This is how they made things go.  He would have said that boy would have his rights plenty well protected, later, when he got a lawyer, somewhere down the line, but that was not his responsibility, and really didn’t come to mind. They stormed the home with a SWAT team and tore it all to pieces, looking for drugs that were not there. The boy was found later and ended up dead. Turned out the local had the boy mixed up with another guy.
