Taking the wrong path

Blue

by Heather Knight

His eyes were blue
like a summer sky.
They would swallow me
 when we talked and laughed
and I would forget
the ring on my hand.

We shared many train trips
and stolen nights,
my hands in his grey hair,
his hands on my waist.
My husband at home,
the kids in their beds.
The stars in the sky,
looking down on me
feeling ashamed.

He had hypnotised me,
I forgot real life,
he said he was lonely,
I believed his lies.
I was young, naive,
and his eyes were blue
like a tranquil lake.

When he said goodbye
his eyes were pale azure,
they reminded me of an icy pond.
When he said goodbye,
they pierced my soul,
they tore at my heartstrings.

Time has healed the wound,
I've almost forgotten,
but sometimes at night
he visits me in my dreams.
His grey eyes of steel
bore into me.

I gave into temptation
All those years ago
and I was stripped of
the music of my soul.
Those blue eyes poisoned
everything I loved,
but I was strong,
although a bit too late,
and in the end
I got rid of the spell he'd cast
on the girl of yore.
