What Makes Me Cry

I never cry at movies, plays, or books, or TV shows,
Or even at the real-life loss of people that I know.
It’s just so strange I have this dearth, this inability.
It surely seems to demonstrate a lack of empathy.

There is one thing that brings it out, surprising though it seems.
It’s writing fiction where my characters, in made-up scenes,
Experience emotions that will move me to the core.
I’ll cry as I am writing them, and down my face will pour…

Such tears that they will cease to stop until the scene is through,
And when I try to read it back, begin again anew.
It’s writing that provides me with an outlet for these tears
And proves to me that I am not the soulless beast I feared.
