Dancing Milkweeds

by June Sargent

See milkweeds dancing for the Queen.

Migrating Monarch has returned.

Desire to fly back home was keen.

For this delight the Queen has yearned.

Each fall this butterfly leaves home

on yearly trip to Mexico.

Cold weather forces her to roam

in search of sunny Southern glow.

With wings of gossamer she flies

to highland forests where she'll breed.

In spring an orange cloud will rise

with offspring following her lead.

These dancing blossoms lure them back

to grace our gardens in the spring,

where milky sap serves as a snack

beneath the trees where bluebirds sing.
