Exceptional
This work has reached the exceptional level
That's why they call me

Mrs. Sports

by Janet Foor

Don't know a base hit from a balk -
a line drive from an infield fly.
I don't know if they're safe or out
but now I know the reason why.

It seems that strong athletic gene
is missing from my DNA.
But I am always in the stands
to chant, to cheer and shout "Hurray!"

So, on this Sunday afternoon
when everyone agreed to meet
for food and fun and great ball games,
I was excited for the treat.

The youngest grand was sad that day
for no one chose him for their team.
He looked unhappy, pitiful.
To play on game day was his dream.

He said to me, "Can we play catch?
I have a ball in Momma's car."
I said, "Of course I'll play with you,
and in this game, you'll be the star."

He threw the ball up in the air.
It went so high it touched the sky.
I laughed and said, "Now this is fun".
T'was then, it hit me in the eye.

It seems a shiner wins the day.
It's written in the game reports.
My grand and me made history.
That's why they call me Mrs. Sports.

For most of my family, sports and competition are second nature. My daughter excelled at several sports in high school, played volleyball for Penn State and is now a Division 1 Volleyball coach. My oldest grandson played high school, college and pro-soccer in Australia and now coaches soccer. The youngest grandson (the one is the story) was born with 50% hearing loss in both ears, but this handicap has never deterred him from playing sports. He is currently playing soccer at Gauladette University in DC and is on the US Deaf National Team that played in Brazil last summer. In one game, he got to start, made a goal, and got his nose broken. I guess I'm lucky, I only got a black eye. But now he and I have a sports war story in common. (smile)
