Davy Romano sat on the wooden bench near the indoor track envying the man in the Marine t-shirt walking swiftly with a prosthetic leg.
"That hurt?" Davy shouted.
"Not any more."
"How'd you lose it?"
"Join me and I'll tell you."
The boy obeyed and hopped along on crutches.
"My leg got blown off. How'd you lose yours, kid?"
"Car wreck. My dad was killed."
Five laps and more backstory later, Kurt and Davy were pals.
"If you had a new leg like mine, would you train with me for the Marathon?"
Davy's eyes shone.
"You bet I would!"
