A chapter in the book The Maid of Bitmore Swamp

Happy Ever After, Maybe....

by Shirley McLain

The witch of Bitmore Swamp left the swamp for a new life in her hometown with her daughter, Anya. Her biggest fear was being recognized as the witch. She has a helper, Tal, who was recommended by her
Bethelda began to cry as soon as she crossed the threshold. She couldn’t hold back both her relief and sadness. Hurriedly going into the library with Tal right on her heels.

“Bethelda, what is the matter? I thought you would be happy this ordeal is over.”

“Oh, Tal, these are tears of relief and sadness over Walkford’s betrayal. I know he wasn’t expecting to ever see me again, and then I became his employer.”

“So, what do you want to do with him?”

“I know I don’t want him killed. He is an old man now and has worked at this estate since he was a boy. He didn’t understand what was happening with Jessie. All he knew was I killed his uncle. There has to be something else we can do.”

“We always have choices, Duchess. Do you want him to stay here?”

“Not like he is now. I want the Walkford that didn’t know anything about me.”

“I can take care of that. How about me wiping the memory of his uncle. That will relieve him of all anxiety and help you trust him again.”

“I can live with that. You are such a wonderful man, and I never want to be away from you.”

“I promise you will never be far away from me. You get in too much trouble for me to let you out of my sight for long. I do have a solution in mind.”

“Really, and how do you solve the problem concerning me?”

“I’m going to get a special license tomorrow, and the day after we will be married in the estate chapel.”

Bethelda jumped and grabbed Tal, kissing him hard. “Oh yes, that is a great way to take care of your problem. I can hardly wait.”

The library door opened, with both Anya and Stu standing in the doorway with big grins displayed on their faces. “Mother, what is going on here?”

“Anya, darling, Tal and I are getting married in our chapel the day after tomorrow.”

Stu jumped into the conversation and said congratulations to the happy couple. “ Do you think I could go with you tomorrow? I have a license of my own to get.”

“What did you say, Stu?” Bethelda couldn’t believe what she heard. “You and Anya are getting married? Oh my goodness, I need to sit.”

“Mother, how do you feel about us having a double wedding? It would be something neither of us could ever forget. Not that we would, anyway.”

Jumping to her feet, the Duchess ran to her daughter and gathered her in her arms. “I think it is a wonderful idea if our men don’t mind.” Tal and Stu nodded in agreement as they smiled at the two women.

“It looks like a double wedding is in our future. All right ladies, get ready for the wedding is your domain, and taking care of the license and magistrate is ours,” Tal said.

“Tal, please take care of the wagon situation so Walkford can get back to work.”

“Your wish is my command, Duchess.” Tal quickly walked to Bethelda and kissed her soundly on the mouth.

Stu smiled and said he would turn in, because tomorrow was a busy day. He went to Anya and kissed her. “I’ll see you ladies tomorrow, goodnight.”

“Goodnight, Stu,” Bethelda said.

Anya walked Stu to the door, kissed him again, and said goodnight. She walked back to her mother and gave her another hug and kiss. “I’m so happy. I can hardly contain myself. We will have a double wedding. Life can’t get better than this.”

“Anya, our world is changing once again, and I know it is for the better. We will start the school soon, as well as our education. The Great Mother has blessed us, indeed.
