Something Missing

by LisaMay

Davey was driving along a remote rural road when he saw the old man walking up ahead. At the sound of Davey’s vehicle, the man turned and stuck his thumb out hopefully.

After he’d slowed to a halt, Davey called out: “Where are you heading, mate?”

“The nearest town. I need to stock up with supplies.”

“Hop in then. I’m going there too. I have to get provisions for the farm.”

The old man opened the door and climbed in. “Terrific. Gidday. I’m Gordon.”

They chatted amiably as they rattled along. The old rabbit-trapper was something of a comedian, full of jokes and good-humoured chat. Clearly he was enjoying some company after a prolonged stay in the bush.

Gordon settled back and sighed with contentment. He took off his knitted cap then chuckled mischievously.

“It’ll be good to be able to buy a new comb.”

Davey glanced across at Gordon. The old feller was as bald as a billiard ball.

“How come you need a comb? Your beard doesn’t look too wild and woolly.”

“My comb’s got a broken tooth.”

Davey was perplexed. “But you can still use a comb that's missing a tooth.”

Gordon responded with a twinkle in his eye, “Yeah, you're right. But it was the last tooth.”
