Regret for a life gone off the rails

I Will Always Regret

by nomi338

Foolishly I squandered the good time
Lost the joy I felt when you were mine.
Like a silly fool, I broke every rule
I tried to have my cake and eat it too.

I should not have come back to this place
Looking at you, I feel so much disgrace.
I apologize for the things I did,
Should never have left you alone with a kid.

Seduced by the streets, they became my life
Reduced by the loss, of you as my wife.
I was locked away inside a jail cell,
The closest thing to a living hell.

I regret the person that I became,
I was just a number without a name.
Fighting against lowered self esteem
Cannot stop feeling, I let down my team

Parents gave me more than I deserved
Gave some back with the time that I served
Drugs were much too easy for me to get
Gambled with my future and lost the bet.

My son resents my not being there
Reached out to him, but he did not care.
I pray that he does not make my mistake
That would be more than I could ever take.

Three lives were ruined before I grew up
I am forced to drink from this bitter cup.
With the backs of my ears still very wet
I made some moves I will always regret.

First things first. This is not biographical. It is a study in how some people who get too much materially, and not enough guidance, can ruin their lives through excess.
