Life cycles

by Wendy G

Writing Challenge Contest Winner

Life's cycle … simply set out in seasons

Man never knows his length of days
Life's rich with seasons, not just one phase

Birth, childhood, youth – that season is spring
Summer of life … fulfilment – hearts sing
Slow descent: autumn's loss to winter's sting.

Green: colour of spring's wondrous sight …
The joy and fresh innocence of a child
Learning, growing with great delight
Developing fast … child's wisdom is filed.

Summer: the season of heat and hard work
Yellow the bright colour of summer's hot sun
Man's success is a feat … but worries can lurk
Life moves at great pace, with its race to run
But it's also soon over … so enjoy the fun.

Red and rich gold, russet, and brown
Autumn's arrived, and leaves flutter down
Man starts to unwind, child-raising is done
They're on their own – that prize is won
Now heart turns to elderly folk there –
Parents now claim man's time and care.

Winter is often a season of blues
Aching bones, illness, and friends to lose
The biting cold hurts when tree limbs are bare
But trees stand with patience, don't bow to care
And so must man as he slows his pace,
Staying thankful for life by God's good grace …
Knowing that one day soon His Master he'll face.

Yes, the seasons pass quickly as time flies by
Man's time-span of life will like-wise flow fast
But he looks to his future, not back to his past
And prepares himself well for the time he will die.
There aren't always answers to questions like Why?
The solutions may be for man's mind too vast
Yet the sun shines its way through shadows cast
And life's spring returns, for the seasons don't lie.
