A great teacher.

Mrs. Strong

by Carolyn Dooley

Mildred Strong, my sixth-grade teacher, was an English major. She taught me the requisite writing English course. I would not have had any problems if she had been my teacher throughout my school days.

She had a vast stage behind her desk. On the stage, we staged many plays. Among all my teachers, she is the best I've ever had. She taught us how to memorise prepositions in a way that I will never forget. She'd ask,

"What can you do with this tree?" using a tree she'd drawn.

There was an older pregnant girl in the class. I was taken aback when I found out she was having a child. I was only twelve years old. One day, she brought the infant to class to visit the teacher after giving birth. Mrs. Strong demonstrated class by not turning the girl away.

It brought back memories for me. Later in life, I was told, the unborn child's father attempted suicide by shooting himself in the head. He lived. The youngster, on the other hand, was raised to believe that her mother was her sister. The grandmother became the mother of the child.

Instead of sending you to the principal's office, she would force you to sit on her lap in front of the class if a student was caught not listening or acting up.

Before we went to lunch, she would have us line up and walk us to the lavatory to wash our hands. After lunch, she told us to rinse our mouths by putting water in our mouths and spitting it out.

When I looked up one day, she cleaned her teeth with one of her fingers. Years later, when my husband and I talked about Mrs. Strong, he said she was his sixth-grade teacher, and he had seen her do the same thing.

She was an extremely intelligent woman. She didn't dislike anyone.
