Joanne's Big Hit

by Paul McFarland

Joanne McDonald is my name,
And T-Ball is my favorite game.
Last Saturday, down at the park,
We played a game right after dark.

Now it was one of those warm nights.
We had to play beneath the lights.
When that last inning came around,
The score was tied with two men down.

Now it was my turn at the bat,
And I was nervous as a cat.
My dad was watching in the stands.
He's proud of me there clapping hands.

The ball was set upon the T,
And so it now was up to me
To try to score the winning run.
I'd like to show them how it's done.

I know that Casey did strike out,
And in my mind, there was some doubt.
I'd never had a hit before,
But my team needed me to score.

I kept my eye right on the ball,
And when I swung, I got it all.
The ball went over second base.
And Tommy Jones gave it a chase.

It rolled out to the outfield fence.
My first real hit. It was intense.
I rounded first. My feet were flying.
Tommy Jones was really trying.

He threw the ball to second base,
But I kept running, just in case.
The second baseman dropped the ball,
So on to third, skid marks and all.

The shortstop then threw to home plate.
I slid in safely, feeling great.
So I had scored the winning run.
My T-Ball coach said, "Job well done.".
