Dinnertime

Maria thought of who she once had been,
before they met her life was full of joy.
But soon, she understood just how he was,
and that she was, to him, just one more toy.

She separated from him but felt fear,
he told her he would never let her go.
She hid her bruises well, but scars inside
can hurt far more, as those who have them know.

He watched her day and night, that's no surprise,
no matter where she went he would be there.
Sometimes he'd call, play with her heart for fun,
her self-esteem destroyed, he didn't care.

Scenarios she played out in her mind,
creating graphic scenes about his end.
But violence was not part of who she was,
so on her intellect, she would depend.

A happy mask she wore, dinner prepared,
he thought himself quite clever from the start.
The candy, flowers, notes that he had sent,
had finally brought her back into his heart.

The chicken had the right amount of spice,
the wine was sparkling red, a bloody shade.
He thought perhaps he'd hit her just for fun,
that is, of course, after sweet love was made.

But they would not be lovers on this night,
for in his wine, she added something new.
Death waited in the wings to make his claim,
then free she was, her nightmare finally through.

They couldn't figure out how he had died,
it wouldn't be detected, not at all.
Colorless, odorless and slightly sweet,
the perfect wine that soon led to his fall.

Maria acted as she knew she should,
producing just the right amount of tears.
But in her heart and mind, she felt at peace,
as laid to rest with him was all her fears.
