My sonnet version

Those Final Years

by jaybird1

Life's weary road I've travelled long
and travelled on my aging feet.
The ones I travelled with are gone,
to see them now would be a treat.

The best of life seemed up ahead,
so, I pressed on, no time to waste.
My words and deeds were left unread,
forgotten by my need for haste.

Theres no one here to hold my hand,
to hear regrets, or battles won,
or show me that they understand
As I now face the setting sun.

My stumbling feet move painful, slow-
My road is short, not far to go.

I am in my 98th year and ever thankful for
those many, eventual years- jaybird
