The boulder in the poem could refer to the Easter message of Jesus' exit from the tomb; or to the ancient Greek legend of Sisyphus, a ruler whom Zeus punished by forcing him to roll an immense boulder up a hill only for it to roll down every time it neared the top, repeating this action for eternity.
