Yalunga was busy making rivers, hills and mountains. There came along Kurria the crocodile and other animals to gaze at Yalunga the rainbow serpent.

"What are you doing Yalunga?" Kurria asked.
"Busy doing what Baiame asked me to do."

Along came Jayawa the water spirit. Followed by Krangalang, the crab and Maamu, the worst evil spirit to inhabit the land.

"How come you were asked to form the land?" Maamu grinned.
"Because I am the rainbow serpent and if you don't leave, I will eat you."

"You can't eat me, I am spirit." He laughed.
"Don't try my patience evil one." Yalunga's jaws opened to show a
tunnel of darkness.

Maamu disappeared down Yalunga's yawning maw of darkness.
"Glad you got rid of him." Spoke Jayawa the water spirit.
"Not for long, he is spirit and will cause havoc amongst the people."

"Hurry up and make me a river." Squeaked Krangalang the crab.
"Yes, I am waiting to dive into a cool stream." Jayawa moaned.

Baiame formed the trees and clouds, making them pregnant with rain. He looked at his animals and decided to pull a joke upon them.

Kurria swished his massive tail and crawled into the water along with the water spirit and Krangalang the crab, who immediately dug a hole.

Down the river there was a bark hut with smoke curling from a fire. The ancestors hidden in the gum trees came out to see what was in the hut.
They gathered around with the animals and watched for something, or someone to come out to greet them.

Suddenly, Maamu appeared to them all. "I will destroy your country and your bones will be bleached by the sun!"

"No, you cannot destroy us, we are spirit." Said the gathering.

"There is no Baiame, I am the Creator of this land." Maamu stamped his foot and the earth cracked open to release all kinds of underworld creatures.

The ancestor spirits flew back into the gum trees that were now covered with bull-ants. Kurria crocodile opened his massive jaws and swallowed a barramundi whole. "Thank you Maamu, I will join your quest." Kurria started to choke on the so-called fish. He was a greedy crocodile. He coughed up a fat tree-limb.

Yalunga spoke with a mighty voice. "Believe in Great Spirit, maker of all living things."

Baiame changed from the evil Maamu to a shining tree.
"I was testing your faith in me. There will always be good and evil in this world. When you cry Baiame, you cry Father. I will carry you when you are lost, show you food when you are hungry and love you, because I created you." He quickly disappeared into the clouds. It started to rain.
