Born To Be Wild

by LisaMay

Music Makes Hearts Beat Contest Winner

That song sure got my motor running. It took just a few opening bars and the song was stuck in my head forever. It was 1969, my last year of high school; I was on the threshold of freedom, ready to ‘head out on the highway, looking for adventure’. I was a girl with a bicycle just then, but that song convinced me I was born to be wild.

Author Note:
My favourite music back in late 60's-early 70's was folk rock such as Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, or sentimental songs by Bread. When I heard 'Born to be Wild', sung by Steppenwolf for the movie 'Easy Rider' (starring Peter Fonda, Dennis Hopper, and Jack Nicholson) in 1969, it made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up and my heart beat faster. I was a 'good girl'; I obeyed my parents; I came home at the time I was expected to; I was good at school; but that song spoke to the hidden, thrill-seeking rebel in me.

Lyrics to 'Born to Be Wild'

Get your motor runnin'
Head out on the highway
Looking for adventure
In whatever comes our way

Yeah, darlin' gonna make it happen
Take the world in a love embrace
Fire all of your guns at once
And explode into space

I like smoke and lightnin'
Heavy metal thunder
Racing with the wind
And the feeling that I'm under

Yeah, darlin' gonna make it happen
Take the world in a love embrace
Fire all of your guns at once
And explode into space

Like a true nature's child
We were born
Born to be wild
We can climb so high
I never wanna die

Born to be wild
Born to be wild
