The Great Molasses Flood

by HarambeForPresident

Tonight I regale with a tale that surpasses
Ol' Noah who sailed far above the landmasses
A tale to be tended in all the madrassas,
Whispered by Sisters and sung in great masses

A bigly long buildup with turned hourglasses
Some things are designed and sometimes it just happens
Nobody watching while pressure amasses
'Til finally comes a Big Bang from hot gasses

Limber young lasses cease batting eyelashes
While old geezers gaze over bifocal glasses
High 25 feet, down the street it now crashes
Before their eyes passing a wave of molasses

Each horse-cart it smashes, lads fall on their asses
Drowning in sugary swaths, each one splashes
A Roald Dahl demented muse of Parnassus
Rescuers wading out in their galoshes

Twenty-one people and their hapless horses
Succumbed on that day, according to sources
And the government made folks pass multiple courses
To insure Noah's rainbow against more molasses.

Freak disaster contest entry

I noticed that another author picked the same historical disaster that I did. This is a coincidence; neither of us copied or took ideas from the other. I wrote my version for the centennial, three years ago, and submitted it after the other user's submission.
