Inner Tube Wars

by HarryT

When we were kids at Silver Lake
We called ourselves the gang of eight
Made up a game called inner tube war
Each of us had an old car tire inner tube

After choosing sides into the water, we’d splash
Line up opposite each other four on a side
Kneeling on the back of the tubes, the fronts
Rose high like riders doing motorcycle wheelies

We’d yell charge, the battle was on
Paddle like crazy and splashing together
Fighting to knock a shrieking opponent
Into the green churning, Silver Lake water

Each victory a soaking combat match
Fallen foes would swim to the shore
Hauling their inner tubes behind

Last boy or girl still riding an inner tube
Brought home victory for their team,
Losers had to buy Cokes all around

To this day when I meet by chance
One of the gang of eight, spending time
At our well-loved lake, we will wistfully
Remember the times of the inner tube wars
