Tiki and Felix were VERY naughty

I'm a Good Cat, Mummy

by Cass Carlton

"Where are the cats?" I said, I said,
As we made ready to park our "van"
No-one saw where they had fled
Until a warning from a friendly man

"Is that them there?" with a grin on his face
It was and I was aghast
Sitting as though they were watching a race
While enormous trucks thundered past

They knew they'd been naughty, alright, alright,
Came scurrying back at my call
"We didn't mean to give you a fright
Just watching the trucks, that was all."

This is a true story. It was 1975. We were at Northam on the road to Perth, capital city of Western Australia. We were about to park our caravan (van to the Australian readers) when I asked my husband where the two cats were. They had been let out of the van about ten minutes before. Usually they were very good, sniffing the van's corners before going off to "dig a hole" and returning straight away. This time they didn't follow their usual pattern, but went right up to the main road and sat, side by side watching the huge semi- trailers roar past with not so much as a twitch of their whiskers. As soon as I called them they looked so guilty and raced back, repentant and contrite. It was a talking point for us for years. Our trip to W.A. was a wonderful experience for us all as a family. We had our two young sons with us who were also very concerned at Tiki and Felix's odd behaviour.
Pays one point and 2 member cents.
