Life on a Bubble

by HarryT

I was in big trouble
My life on the bubble
I owed big money
It wasn’t funny
Word on the street
A hitman out for me

My imagination ran loose,
Tried to conjure an excuse
A hitman was out for me

Prayed for a way to escape my fate
Wasn’t ready for St. Peter’s gate
A hitman was out for me

Spied a car in my rearview mirror,
Heart filled with roiling fear,
A hitman was out for me

Driver motion me to pull to the side
No choice. I had to abide.
A hitman was out for me

He pulled open my car door
I wanted to sink into the floor
Hitman had caught up with me

But to my relief, he brandished no gun
He said, in a not unfriendly tone, “Now son,
Lucky for you your father was my army buddy
I told him your plight; he didn’t want you bloody
So, he paid the big boss the money.”

Then he said, for my own good,
“Next time you renege
Your fate will be the grave.”

Fortunately for me, this guy knew my dad
I thank God he was not really so bad
Tears in my eyes, I promised the hitman
Getting drug free was my God-honest plan
