The Patient

SUPERNATURAL~ (NOT HORROR fiction) Contest Winner

As soon as I graduated from medical college, I was temporarily appointed to do the night shift in the district headquarters hospital. I liked this duty because it was just for 8 hours daily, and the nights were quiet and calm.

Everything was fine till one day when an old man was admitted to my ward. I didn’t know what he was diagnosed with, but he was just a skeleton underneath the skin. Big bald head, eyes popping out the sockets, mouth wide open.

On the fourth day, when I was checking his medical records, I felt a sudden discomfort of some sort.

I raised my head and found that the old man had turned towards me and was staring at me.

His gaze was straight and uninterrupted as if he were looking into my soul.

Soon my colleague appeared to take over the charge and I was out of the hospital as speedily as possible. My home was in the neighbourhood, and it was 15mins walk from the hospital.

I reached the street where my house was situated at the very end. It’s a long and closed street and poorly lit.

As I was entering, I saw somebody right in the middle of the street. The figure was 40 yards ahead, ambling, leaning heavily to the right side in a funny stance.

I didn’t halt but walked quickly towards him. Suddenly something started screaming so loud in my head that there was danger ahead.

“ Hello, Sir. Need any help?” I called out to him. He halted.

When I caught up with him, his face came into focus. That was the very same, very real sick old man I was looking after an hour ago.

A cold shiver went through me, and I almost ran to reach home.

Before entering my home, I looked back. There was no one on the street.

I went into my room and scanned the road from the window that opened towards the street.

I did not see anyone. I remained silent and thinking of any legitimate reasoning that could defy this phenomenon.

Then I heard a kind of moaning and lamenting in low pitch. And a shiver ran through my spine.

I knew I was experiencing paranormal activity.

And a couple of minutes later  it stopped. I could feel that no one was outside my home now.

Then the silence of the night was broken by the ringing of the telephone in my room.

It was my colleague.

“No need to come to hospital tomorrow. The old man died as soon as  you left.”
