What Are We Doing?

by The Bantering Welshman

What are we doing?

It’s what I hear

The voice in my head

Or from my own lips

Who controls them instead?

What are we doing?

It’s the first thing I think

In the early hour

As I switch on the light

To look in the mirror.

What are we doing?

It’s the query in mind

After a few lines of text

As I stop to wonder

What shall I write next?

What are we doing?

It’s a bold allegation

At the moment I’m idle

Of time ill wasted

And the guilt does sidle.

What are we doing?

For years on now

The question’s been posed,

For years I’ve wondered

Who wants to know?

What are we doing?

It’s ever been posed

Only to me

I am but one

So, who are we?

What are we doing?

In a cavernous quiet

It’s an abrupt echo heard,

When no one around

Speaks naught a word

What are we doing?

When distraction goes silent

And rest is nigh

I hear it still

In the calm by in by.

What are we doing?

The Spirit calls out

To me in my dreams

The Owl rests on sill

After soaring on wings

What are we doing?

The old woman’s face

In a pale light glows

Through the lips of a child

She speaks what she knows

What are we doing?

I hear her voice

This she calls to me

Does she encourage progress

Or drive absurdity?

Poem: Owls writing prompt entry
Writing Prompt
Write a poem, in any format about Owls or The Owl, if you prefer, since October is the month when Owls are very active and of course Halloween!

When I write, this is a real question posed in my mind for decades - What are we doing? In 2008 I learned a name and a face to attach to that question. I have since written many stories with this mythological entity that is often associated with an Owl. This is that feeling in a surreal poem.
