An Apple, One Day

by VJWild

The author has placed a warning on this post for violence.

"Come darling. Take a bite. I promise you it's delicious."

The little girl smiled, showing me the big gaps between the few teeth she actually had. A pudgy outstretched arm displayed a small, lumpy, lopsided apple she'd just discovered at her bare feet.

She bit through the fruit's fibrous flesh, its tart and tannic juices running down her chin. This didn't taste like an ordinary apple. It was different.

Reluctantly she took another bite, chewed, contemplated, then took another, and another, until she reached the core. I could see she was hungry, but certainly not starved.

She threw the remnants back at me, "I want more! Now!"

Another apple dropped from one of my branches, nearly hitting her on the top of her head. She picked it up and took a bite, then another, and another. Then she began to choke. Her face turned blue and cold, her mouth blistering, bright red, blood flowing from between those large tooth gaps.

Laughter and giggles echoed throughout the bewitched orchard as the little girl fell to the ground, her entire body convulsing violently, arms stiff, wanting to curl into her chest. The baby doll she was carrying was now lying next to her, face up, its eyes open wide, clearly in a state of despair and panic, staring up at my beautiful canopy of leaves.

"Ma-ma, ma-ma" said the baby doll. The little girl reached for the doll just as her body went limp, just before the last breath escaped her lips.
