The Haunted Mouse House

by Patty Palmer

The small door creaked as Wimple pushed it open. The main room was dismal and long shadows hung amongst the spider webs. A thick layer of dust signified there had been no one there for a long time. At least, not of a live mouse nature.

Wimple's Uncle Calan Mouse had lived here with his wife, Mary Mouse, for all of their adult mouse lives. Mary had died a few years before when she'd been caught in a mousetrap just outside their front door.

For the last years of his life, Uncle Calan swore that Mary still existed and visited him there often until his death.

The mouse house had been left to him in his uncle's will. He wasn't sure whether he wanted to live there or not among the ghosts of the past that were said to exist, coming out and playing all night long.

The sound of a honky-tonk piano broke through the silence. Wimple jumped, looking for a place to hide.

Several ghostly mice, dressed in clothing, depicting each couple's historic era in which they had lived in the house, began dancing the Minuet in the middle of the long hall.

They looked harmless enough and when he spotted Uncle Calan and Aunt Mary Mouse, he felt at ease.

They welcomed him home. Looking down at himself, he saw that he was dressed in a 90's outfit, realizing now that he was dead and a ghost himself. Now, this house was his home.
