Sing Etta Sing

Sing Etta sing
Let the smoothness of your voice
Like sweet dark molasses
Pour over my troubled brow
And soothe away the ache in my soul

Ooooh Sing Etta
Somewhere between a moan
And hot-buttered finger-licking, melodic, hum
A gut-wrenching, body shaking, soul-stirring
Exhalation of yes - finally
Lasting only as long as a 45 rpm

Etta Sing
And in that short moment
We plunged into the depth of your bottomless despair
And rose. In that deeply orgasmic, mystical, moment of ecstasy
Our pain mingled with yours redeeming us
Releasing fire and smoke and beauty
At last

Writing Prompt
Write a poem either free verse or rhyming about music or a story. If you write a story, it needs to be 200-300 words.


Some artists sing songs as if they composed them. They seem to have a depth of understanding which supersedes performance and reveals experiences they know. Nothing stirs the soul like the first few measures of the song, "At Last" sung by Etta James. I know it's been redone by Beyonce, and done well. But Etta captures something of loss, pain, longing, and redemption that no one else can. If you've never heard it, listen to it.
