the abduction of the twins almost renews the war

the abduction of the Twins

by jake cosmos aller

In the ancient land of UR
A land split between hostile governments
One north of the UR river,
The other south of the UR river
Which bisected the capital region.

Both sides claimed
to the only legit government
Both having their own
self-proclaimed King of the UR

The two kings were twins,
Only son of the former King
Of the Unified UR State.

Which brother would be King
Had started the civil war
Which ended in a stalemate
And cold war
Which had lasted for almost 70 years

And were now almost 90 years old
Who would replace them
Was the talk of both URs
Another civil war loomed.

Now they lived in a cold war,
Launching propaganda wars
Every day,
Keeping up the hate
That so divided them.

Both sides having their own written language,
But speaking the same spoken language,
Shared the same culture,
Watched the same programs,
Played the same games,
Ate the same food,
Believed in the same Gods.

But both convinced that their King
Was the only rightful King of the UR

In the northern suburbs,
There lived two delightful twin girls
Rose, and Maria, and their brother Gilbert

They would spend the days
Walking along the northern shore of the river
Behind the military fortresses
Along the parkway.

Looking across at Southern UR
Debating which was the real UR?
Which was better?

Sam Adams and his wife
Maria Adams
Were senior government officials
in the capital region.

They knew the truth
That UR was once united
And will be again soon

the twins were distant cousins
of the two Kings
the Northern King
loved his cousins,

the Southern King
knew about them
but had never met them.

the civil war had long divided
The country into two hostile camps
But they were determined to end that soon

By uniting behind one King for the UR
The nephew of the current kings
Much beloved by all,
Recently returned from studying
In the land of Summer.

A true reformer
Wanted to end
The dictatorial rule
Of the two Kings,
Vowing to be King
For all the people.

Promising to end
The state of terror,
And empty the prisons
Of political prisoners
And ending torture
Throughout the land of UR

One day Rose and Maria
Went missing
Gilbert had wandered off
To use the facilities
When he came back.

He saw a wolf carrying them off
Across the river,
Where an old mysterious witch
Was waiting for them.

The witch took them in
Adopting them
when they were five years old.

They grew up missing their family
Staring out at the northern banks,
Occasionally seeing Gilbert,
their parents
Neighbors and friends.

But unable to make contact
Across the heavily fortified river,
Lined with military bases and forts,

Gilbert joined the military
Convinced his superiors,
To launch a surprise raid
Against the south,
To rescue the twins.

The abduction of the twins
had long threatened to reignite
The civil war.

the Northern high command
approved the raid
which Gilbert led.

Michelle Moore the witch
Was ready

Launched many fake demons and monsters,
Against the northern raiders,
Who quickly aborted the mission.

The twins were not there
They had gone to a party
For their coming-out debut.

Michelle had big plans
For her adopted children,
Who were the most beautiful women
In all of UR.

The Southern UR government
Issued a demand for an apology
And denied that the twins
were originally from the north,
the witch had found them
abandoned on the river
and raised them as her own.

She raised them
in high southern society,
they soon learned
To go along with the official line,
Or face severe punishment
Including torture and prison.

That was the fate of dissenters
In both of the UR states,
As both were brutal regimes.

Much feared and hated by the public
That was the one thing
Everyone agreed upon
Both governments were illegitimate

The return of the twins

Gilbert one day,
Went to the South
In a rogue operation.

Disguised as a street vendor
He went to her house
Met with his sisters
Who he told to stay quiet.

And slipped them a note
Tonight, at midnight,
We will return for you.

The sisters were not sure
That they wanted to return
they were living
In Southern UR high society,
And their adopted mother
Treated them nicely.

They lived in luxury
The witch was the sister
Of the King
Part of the elite of the society.

Much admired and feared
For her mastery of the dark
Magical arts.

But they finally decided
They had to return
To see their parents
Then they would decide
Which UR they would live in

Perhaps return
Perhaps not.

They went to another party
Got back at midnight
Went with Gilbert,
Got in the boat.

Had a tearful reunion
The Southern Government demanded
Their swift return
Noting they were the adopted nieces
Of the King.

The northern government
Offered to provide DNA tests
Which they administered
In front of officials from both side

At the peace village office,
on an island in the middle,
of the Ur river,
Which was the only spot
The two governments ever met.

the scientists in UR had just
invented DNA technology,
The land of UR
Was quite modern
In its ancient ways.

In its ancient time
Thousands of years
Before the modern world.

The test came back positive
The two girls decided
they would live half the year
In each land.

And devote themselves
To reconciliation
and ending the cold war.

thus ended the abduction crisis
of the twins,
in the ancient land of UR
thousands of years
before our time.

I dreamt this epic poem up one night. The land of Ur is a legendary land in the bible, and in Lovecraftian lore, it is an ancient city somewhere in central Asia Aston Clara Smith wrote a number of gothic horror stories about the mysterious doomed land of Ur. It is Ur that is the setting of this poem. I took liberties with the story, making the city appear to be in many respects, a modern society complete with DNA, cold war ideology, and human rights concerns. And the division of the city into two hostile camps I borrowed from North and South Korea.
