A Small Boat Upon the Calm Sea

The boat

by Cass Carlton

No oars, no sail,
No crew to hail
Alone upon the ocean's breast
No words or numbers to attest
Where it came from or why
It now floats at ease beneath a silent sky.

Rather a shame it,
No-one will claim it
Lest misfortune befall the uncaring.
Perhaps some-one with daring
The lost craft will claim
And proudly give her a name

What could it be?
"Child of the Sea"
"Storm's Child", or "Lost Without Warning."
When next it casts up in some far morning,
She won't be lost, but known by the boast
And the name of "Mystery's Dawning"

This is a "Picture This" contest entry. The image of an unmasted, oarless boat sitting quietly on the bosom of a calm, blue sea piqued my curiosity. How did it get there? Whose boat was it? What will become of it? All questions any poet would ask. cheers Cass
