Visits from the supernatural -

A Dark Season

by Senyai

I resist, oh cruel bearer of vaporous dreams
but spun tales lag in my brain unyielding
Your stale breath casts a shadow upon my
cheek as this horror is retold from the past

Supernatural beings are alive in the spirit
of the macabre, dark corners are draped
in ghostly white, shifting patterns upon my
wall, for I cannot slumber but while away in

anguish, once again enthralled in the dank
cellar of fetid dreams, yellow and bile filled
My soul is soaked, sweating on the limb
of salvation, I am losing my footing about

to fall into the yawning ebony pit below
Where fears thrive and sunshine shrinks
as a drop of rain water on sizzling stone
I cannot abide this torture and wake to

a tunnel spiraling down a shaft of midnight
Where I fear I may not emerge, and yet
languish forever, with blackness enfolded
about my visage like smothering gauze

Here … Cthulhu lies dreaming … at the
bottom of the sea where I now float in
limbo, a vast and empty tomb, a watery pit,
where Cthulhu’s vapid eyes are transfixed

beyond as the Great Old One and I slumber on …

Waiting imprisoned in time

* Free verse poem is 26 lines

* Belief in God is the protection from anguish and torment.

* H. P. Lovecraft (Howard Phillips Lovecraft) b.Providence Rhode Island August 20, 1890-d. March 15, 1937) was an American writer of weird, science fiction, supernatural, fantasy, and horror fiction. Lovecraft is best known for his creation of a body of work that became known as the Cthulhu Mythos

* Cthulhu is a fictional cosmic entity created by American writer H.P. Lovecraft in 1928. Considered a Great Old One within the pantheon of Lovecraftian cosmic entities, the creature has since been featured in numerous popular culture references.

* In The Call of Cthulhu, H. P. Lovecraft describes a statue of Cthulhu as - A monster of vaguely anthropoid outline, but with an octopus-like head whose face was a mass of feelers, a scaly, rubbery-looking body, prodigious claws on hind and fore feet, and long, narrow wings behind. Cthulhu is said to resemble an octopus, a dragon, and a human caricature, hundreds of meters tall, with webbed, human-looking arms and legs and a pair of rudimentary wings on its back. Its head is depicted as similar to the entirety of a gigantic octopus, with an unknown number of tentacles surrounding its supposed mouth. He sits at the bottom of the sea sleeping, waiting to rise and rule once again.

* The imprisoned Cthulhu is apparently the source of constant subconscious anxiety for all mankind, and is also the object of worship by other Lovecraftian monsters (called The Deep Ones). The short story asserts the premise that, while currently trapped, Cthulhu will eventually return. His worshippers chant -Ph'nglui mglw'nafh Cthulhu R'lyeh wgah'nagl fhtag, - In his house at R'lyeh, dead Cthulhu waits dreaming.

* That is not dead which can eternal lie,
And with strange aeons, even death may die"

- Abdul Alhazred, Necronomicon
Their time will come again.

Abdul Alhazred, or the Mad Arab, is a recurring character in the works of H.P. Lovecraft. He is frequently cited as the author of the fabled Necronomicon, an occult text containing knowledge from beyond the Earth.
