Mother read to me

by Willie P. Smith

My favorite poems that still fill my head
Are to me the ones, my mother read.

At night when my thoughts were deep,
And my child's mind wouldn't let me sleep.

Her sweet voice with even flow,
Would read to me the poems of old.

Mother Goose poems, I liked best,
They always put my mind to rest.

She read them to me many times,
How I loved those old nursery rhymes.

Mom's voice was almost like a song,
When she read poems that were nice and long.

Mom's gone now, but I remember those rhymes,
She read to me so many times.

My thoughts that were so deep,
faded away into restful sleep.

Mom put me to sleep by reading poems to me. I guess that's why I enjoy writing so much.
