The Wolf I Feed

by June Sargent

There lurks a wolf inside of me,
a beast with eyes aglow with hate.
He stalks me as I try to flee
from anger that does not abate.

Despite my calm exterior,
there lurks a wolf inside of me
who makes me feel inferior.
But wait, another wolf I see!

He does not make me feel petty,
consumed with fiery resentment.
There lurks a wolf inside of me
who shields my heart with contentment.

This wolf will grant me what I need
to be the best that I can be.
This wolf will be the one I feed -
there lurks a wolf inside of me.

There is a constant struggle within each one of us between the positive and negative aspects of our personalities. Which wolf wins depends upon which one we choose to feed.
