The Apple Picker

by Boogienights

The moral of the story. Contest Winner
Halfway down on Marketplace Road,
a young boy was setting up.
On the table apples were placed,
along with an old tin cup.

For just a nickel, apples sweet,
that were just picked off the tree.
were very cheap at just five cents,
buy two and you'd get one free.

The boy lived with his mother,
sister, brother, in a shack.
He worked so hard to pick and sell,
to bring some money back.

The townspeople all stopped and bought,
his family they knew well.
The boy had blisters on his hands,
he worked hard, they could tell.

And when the trees were stripped of fruit,
he looked for other work.
On him the family did depend,
his duty he'd never shirk.

Then one day on his search for work,
he met a man quite strange.
Who looked like he could use a wash,
clean clothes in which to change.

This boy, he had a tender heart,
and said, "come home and rest."
"We have some clothes my father wore,
though they are not the best."

The boy, whose name was Kevin,
did I mention that before?
Led the poor man down the lane,
right to his own front door.

His mother, she was not surprised,
Kevin always did what was right.
To help out others and share his goods,
the stranger spent the night.

When Kevin and his family woke,
the stranger was not there.
He'd left sometime during the night,
He slipped away without a care.

On the old wood table was a note,
and on that was a seed.

Plant this in your garden,
this is all you'll ever need.

Kevin took the tiny seed,
and he planted it with doubt.
Forgot about it, weeks passed by,
then the seed began to sprout.

In just a few short days,
a towering tree stood at the site.
Quite ordinary throughout the day,
but magical at night.

In the evening big gold apples,
would weigh the branches down.
They hung there by the hundreds,
they piled up on the ground.

After that the family,
never once worried again.
Because of just a tiny seed,
given to them by a friend.

Then one day, just by chance you see,
Kevin met the man once more.
He thanked him for the tiny seed,
then he said, "Sir, I implore."

"Why did you give us that great gift,
we thought the whole thing odd."
"Are you an angel from above,
a messenger of God?"

The man paused for a moment,
then he said, "I do rejoice,
in the greatest gift given that day
when you had made the choice..."

"To help someone like me in need,
when you could've walked away."
"Your kind heart is why I appeared
to you that fateful day."

The boy then knew without a doubt,
did I mention his name was Kevin?
That an angel with a seed in hand,
called on him that day from heaven.

The moral of the story is,
be kind and share with others.
For God is watching how we treat,
our sisters and our brothers.

You may not get big gold apples,
but then again, you might!
And if you don't, take comfort
in just knowing you did right.
