A life-long learning experience.
Being a Parent
Adventurous was what I wanted to be
Big as my ambition was, I had to stay the course
Candor makes me confess I had a growing family
Dogs were also an added responsibility
Earsplitting baby cries and barking dogs echoed
Far and wide in our home when they were young.
Generally, I was able to stay nice and calm
Handled the crying babes with fatherly aplomb
I changed their diapers with facility and ease
Jiffy was my skillfully applied patient speed
Kept singing a pleasant baby tune as I labored along.
Learning to be a father is indeed a humbling song
More and more humbling as children grow older but
Never more than when the teenage years begin to roll on.
Offering advice and being frustrated by non-acceptance
Parents’ thoughts viewed with a batting, jaundice eye.
Quick-witted we parents must be to keep up to speed but
Ready always to help when children are in need
Sound advice to give but only when they're disposed
Tactful always dealing with children and their friends
Understanding when they’re talking that they should be heard
Valuable each one of them no matter their ages
Welcoming them home, writing new memory pages
Xenial to their new friends no matter first impressions
Yearning sometimes to look back when they're grown but
Zesty we must admit is our empty nest now that they're gone.
