A man's truck, like his dog, is a very special friend

Ode To My Buddy, Ol' Blue

by Reese Turner

She’s up for sale – and it breaks my heart
“Ol' Blue”s her name, now, how do I start…
I had another pick-up, a small GMC
Since I’m no farmer, was just fine for me.
Nor did I labor in a construction life

But, a man needs a truck if he has a wife.
There’s always something at Home Depot
So, she’d give me her list and off I’d go.
Then we moved out to the country on five
Acres, that’s when truck need came alive.
A Ford F-150, long bed, that's what I found
To haul the new stuff and me all around.
1998, the Fiftieth Year of 150’s style
In the most beautiful blue, did I ever smile!
Years later, I got in local politics for fun;
First election I lost. Second time, I won.
Both elections, I’d wave, in the parade,
From Ol’ Blue’s cab, my campaign made.
Other times, she pulled small campers for us.
We liked to camp. Could not afford a big bus.
The years rolled by, kids were gone, I retired,
By a red Beetle convertible, I was inspired.
Ol’ Blue now just sits by the side of the barn
Unwashed, undriven, un-needed, forlorn…
Men form attachments to inanimate things
Just having Ol' Blue near, such joy it brings.
Women, however, see no need in keeping
Something unused. Women start sweeping!
So, Ol' Blue’s now for sale. Soon we will part.
I’ll surely need counseling for this broken heart.

"my truck" writing prompt entry
Writing Prompt
Write a poem, true or fictional, about a pick-up-truck. Use your imagination.
Must rhyme, length up to author.

In the interest of length, I did not cover taking the daughters to college, bringing them home - so many great memories with Ol Blue. I do believe that dogs go to Heaven... I would think there would be a place for good old trucks, wouldn't you?
Pays one point and 2 member cents.
