Finnegan Begins Again

by Erika Seshadri

remnants of hunger
and tattered wool.

I felt his breath,

uncertain of fate.

I met his eyes,
dull desperation
from chronic neglect.

I touched his leg,
sinews bared
from barbed wire.

I took him home,
he grew in trust
Now we're friends,
the two of us
