Finnegan Begins Again

by Erika Seshadri

I saw his body,
remnants of hunger
and tattered wool.
Haggard

I felt his breath,
warm on my hand
uncertain of fate.
Staggered

I met his eyes,
dull desperation
from chronic neglect.
Pleading

I touched his leg,
sinews bared
from barbed wire.
Bleeding

I took him home,
he grew in trust
Now we're friends,
the two of us
