Where Poetry Waned

     I once looked at poetry
     like creations of views,
     not political bull crap
     or shit on the news.

     Please let me read poetry,
     that's all that I ask.
     Where prompts are not garbaged
     with race, hate or masks.

     I long for the poetry
     where two hearts combine,
     and drown out the masses
     that weep while they whine.

     I'm sick of the poetry
     that's stained black or white,
     with vandalized statues
     no vengeance can right.

     I dream of the poetry
     that covid can't smear,
     yet lost while I'm searching
     so desperately here.

     Please share with us poetry
     like Shakespeare or Poe,
     not repeats of ruin
     we've all come to know.

     I wish for the poetry
     so few can embrace,
     that seek not the refuge
     their own thoughts replace.

     I once believed poetry
     was all I would choose,
     yet ink dried on quills
     when it fell to the news.
