Celebrating the Bunya Tree

The Bush Picnic

by Aussie

Corrowa and Didgenbee stood beneath the Bunya tree
Grandma Weeiji shouts to the boys, you flee
Big nut fall on you, dead you will be
Bunya nuts size of coconuts delicious, good for me

Many tribes across the lands meeting to hold hands
Just like a corrobboree, dancing on sacred lands
Toast the Bunya nuts for a big tucker feed
Men and women, children too, picnic on Bunya seed

Corrowa and Didgenbee dance with glee
Grandma Weeiji claps her hands for all to see
She is Elder of the tribe, age has left it's mark
After picnic, old lady revered, snoring in the dark

Share a Story in Poem Contest Entry: Way back in the good years when tribes were allowed to come together to celebrate a feast, roasting Bunya nuts. Of course this would not be allowed today.
Corroboree: used for many sacred gatherings i.e. a young man coming into manhood. For the coming together of tribes to celebrate special events. Giving thanks to animals killed for food.
The Bunya Tree was cut down in my country town because it did kill a man passing by. That was twenty years ago in a town called Kingaroy (place of the red ant.) Enjoy! Think I'll stick to peanuts.
