The Very Picky Eater

by Leann DS

There was a boy who was so kind,
Intelligent and sweet,
But meatballs, mush, and muffins
Were the only foods he'd eat.

The neighbors all decided to
Help expand his diet.
Each one would bring a new food to
The boy so he could try it.

Aunt Ann acquired apples that
She brought from Alabama.
Barber Bob brought butter beans,
Baloney and bananas.

Cousin Cal cooked cod fish.
Dad tried dates and dill.
Electrician Emma thought
Enchiladas fit the bill.
Farmer Frank faced failure with his
French fries in a bowl.
The gardener got nowhere with
Granola, grapes, and gruel.

Handing over hamburgers,
The hula dancer said,
"Everyone loves burgers!" but
The boy just shook his head.

The ice cream man tried ice cream.
The judge tried jam and jerky.
A kangaroo brought kiwi and
Kebabs made out of turkey.

Lobster from the lawyer and
Noodles from the nurse,
Olives from the oboist and
Plums from painter's purse.

The queen brought quesadillas,
Rice cakes came from Raleigh,
A spy from San Francisco brought
Spam shaped like a trolley.

His teacher tried tomatoes
He brought in from the south,
But the boy refused to bring
The tidbits to his mouth.

Upside down cake from his uncle,
The vet brought vermicelli,
But he would not consider these
For travel to his belly.

A witchy woman waved a wand
Producing watermelon.
Not affected by her charm he
Didn't buy what she was sellin'.

The x-ray tech brought xanthan gum.
The yodeler tried a yam.
The zookeeper made some ziti
Topped with sauce of clam.

Running out of foods to try,
He had the townsfolk huffin',
Because he still would only eat
Meatballs, mush, and muffins.

The whole town was exhausted and
Needed sleep and rest,
So they all decided to
Give up on this quest.

That night at dinner, the young boy,
Fed up with the town,
Began to play a silly game,
And crawled down on the ground.

He'd pretend he was a dog and
They'd leave him alone.
He'd wag his tail and bark and scratch
And nibble on his bone.

He crawled to baby brother and
He lay down at his feet.
He looked up and barked at him
As brother tossed a treat.

The flying food had landed in
The boys mouth, opened wide.
Before he knew what happened,
Down the food did slide.

He wondered and he pondered 'bout
The food now in his tummy.
He licked his lips deciding that
This new food was quite yummy!

Forgetting he was playing,
The boy said, "May I please...
Have meatballs, mush, muffins and...
A plate of mac and cheese?"
