What If

by Lyn Peters

Ben paced.

His heart raced.

Where was she? Why was she late? What if she'd decided not to come?

Would she have called him or sent a text?

Ben checked his phone.

No voice mail messages; no texts; no e-mails.

She might still come.

Ben pulled out a chair and sat but his legs wanted to keep moving. He leaned back in the chair and crossed his legs, right ankle resting on left knee. He wanted to look relaxed, but his leg jiggled up and down making his foot bounce like a demented shoe shaped balloon.

Ben stood and paced.

His heart raced.

His back was turned when he heard her footsteps on the pavement.

Ben stopped himself from whirling around with a goofy grin on his face. What if she wasn't grinning. How would it look?

Ben turned and offered a tentative smile.

"I'm glad you came," he said.
