Plowing the Field

by RodG

Write A Sonnet Contest Winner
At last Spring's come and brought a begged-for sight:
All snow has disappeared from untilled fields.
Desiring pleasure found in plowshare's bite,
I yearn to see what toil and God's plan yields.

My white-faced team is pleased to pull and strain
as blade cuts deeply into dew-wet grass.
We plod and carve incisions in terrain
thick-sodded with a wind-sown weed that's crass.

Tomorrow I shall freckle furrows made
with hand-dropped seeds I saved from last year's crop.

Success depends on placement, how they're laid.
In strings of mounds they'll slumber when I stop.

And then begins my stomach-burning wait.
Will seedlings sprout up soon? What is their fate?
