Ode to my Phone Card Colletion

by tempeste

It started as a joke but soon
it became a real passion,
a somewhat obsession.

These cards were inserted
into a slot 'n once
the credit was consumed
they couldn't be recharged.

Every day I'd check
our local phone booth
for discarded ones.

Buying cards was my last option;
searching, finding them was
my main reason for celebration.

My monthly visits to the city
were the most fruitful.
Gems just waiting to be
salvaged, cleaned 'n added
to my ever-growing collection.

My most cherished series
is dedicated to wildlife;
it features mainly endangered
species like the panda,
tiger, elephant and rhino.

My biggest series counts
a whopping 16 cards,
all-natural wonders
illustrated in all their glory;
sites which as a teen
tickled my curiosity
ignited my imagination.

I have smaller series
on multiple subjects,
from historical figures
to means of transport;
others on flowers, pasta,
shells 'n even cocktails
with details on ingredients
and how to prepare 'n serve them.

My canine series entitled:
Words Are the Only Thing
my Pooch Lacks,
packs quite an
emotional punch.

My sexy dance series includes
the rumba, samba, mambo,
merengue and tango;
the steps of each dance are
neatly drawn and explained
on the back of each card.

Sadly,
with the advent of mobiles,
public booths 'n phone cards
became obsolete.

The value of my collection
today is purely sentimental.

When browsing through
my albums, the memory of
those joyful, carefree days
hunting for phonecard,
overwhelms me always.

I have 500 cards and another 200 doubles .. as you can see from the photo I provided they are very colorful.

Most of my cards are from my country but I do have several from other European countries. I collected cards for about 10 years.

I even got a set off 6 cards dedicated to queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother and family.

The Chinese zodiac ..the dragon took me months to find.
