Absence of Light

by Boogienights

From the rear view mirror
hung two soaked fuzzy dice.
In a water proof tote,
was a note quite precise.

A list of names and messages given.
Written by the soon to be dead, to the living.

Disappointment reigned...

Life turned out to be not like he thought,
stopped was the time on the watch he had bought,
recording precisely the moment he dropped.

In a great metal bird, he flew through the skies,
from a cliff in the dark, to avoid prying eyes.

Happiness feigned...

He revved his engine beneath a starred canopy,
from all of his heartbreak, he'd finally be free.
An inglorious end, he meant it to be.

On the lake bottom, all he was, then erased.
Gone in the blink of an eye with no trace.

Nothing was gained...

Searching for a love that he couldn't obtain,
most all of his life spent in shadows and rain,
tried hard not to let others know of his pain.

Lost in a tunnel of deep dark despair,
so thick he'd claw through it just to get air.

Such disdain...

For a life lost below in the silt, mud, and gloom,
for years he would sit in his own chosen tomb.
As a mother, heartbroken, would cry in his room.

He couldn't say why, and it never was clear,
the reason he was lonely and lived life in fear.

Couldn't explain...

No one could see his pain hidden inside,
no one ever listened to him when he cried.
He couldn't explain it to them if he tried.

Now all those who loved him still wonder and weep.
His mother, she calls out his name in her sleep.

Who's to blame?...

Who knows why depression causes such strife,
it treads oh so soft, yet cuts like a knife.
It can steal away breath and take away life.
